In Maine, college is no longer an option...

The fact is, Maine has one of the top high school completion rates in the country. Yet only 62% of our students go on to college and fewer still graduate with a degree. This leaves Maine with an education gap and many lost opportunities, including:

  • Fewer companies expanding in Maine
  • A loss of skilled, high-paying jobs
  • An out-migration of young people
  • Lower per capita income
  • Decreased civic involvement

Simply put, the jobs of the Knowledge Economy require college degrees - and only 39% of Maine working-age adults have them.

It is a right and responsibility

In the old economy, finishing high school was the minimum requirement for all young people. Now, we face the opportunity - the obligation - to raise the bar: to make college attainment as universal as high school attainment is today. It's time to change our expectations about higher education in Maine.
